Our challenge at Wise Regional Health System was to build a site that conveyed competence, compassion and convenience. We portrayed the competence of the staff by featuring bios of the physicians and a lot of photos of medical staff at work, sophisticated equipment and modern facilities. We also built a Macromedia Flash tour of the hospital as well as a ten minute Flash video slide show of one of the surgeon's revolutionary procedures.

People convey compasssion, so we featured a lot of people on the site. Nearly every page has a photo of a staff member along with a quote saying what he or she particularly likes about working with patients and working at Wise Regional. The photos and quotes are selected from a fairly large database we compiled. They are chosen randomly from the database so the quotes change with every new page, but the random selection is constrained to be appropriate to the part of the hospital the page describes: surgery quotes in the surgery section, childbirth quotes in the childbirth section.

The site is convenient for patients, family and friends and hospital staff. It includes a number of database applications that are frequently updated and frequently used, the most popular being the Virtual Nursery (where family and friends see baby pictures within hours of a birth), the Employment Opportunities section (the best place to check out job opportunities), the Events Calendar and the On-Call Calendar (accessible only by hospital staff).
