Highland Park High School had a Web site that wasn't working
for them. Pages were out of date because updating them took skills
that weren't available in the school. The design of the pages
had degraded (we call it "Web rot") because maintenance
had been done by folks who didn't see the value of restraint and
consistent design.
Highland Park High School asked us to develop the best high school
site in the state of Texas. Our approach was first, to solve their
two biggest problems with the same solution. Ease of maintenance
and design consistency over time were both addressed by making
the site database driven. Updating content was made very easy
by reducing it to form-filling rather than page editing. Content
is now maintained by individuals thoughout the school: course
info by teachers, atheletic team and club info by coaches, players
and members, lunch menues by the cafeteria staff and so on.
Our database approach for Highland Park goes beyond simple database-driven
content management. It also allows integration among the parts.
For example, nearly everything ties to the calendar: class syllabi,
social events, extracurricular schedules and so on. Lots of parts
can tie to the database of photos. Photo galleries can be assembled
for last Friday's football game or Wednesday's chess tournament.
The galleries are accessible through the calendar, through the
football team page or chess page, even through the coach's page
if desired. The net effect is a robust, dynamic, integrated site
that becomes infused into all aspects of the high school experience.
